Abstract
This study provides the first evaluation of the source rock potential of the Dalichai Formation at the Vana stratigraphic section (Central Alborz) by integrating palynofacies analysis and organic geochemical data. Based on the identified biozones and key dinocyst species, the age of the Dalichai Formation in this section is determined as late Bajocian to late Callovian. Source rock potential was evaluated using Rock-Eval pyrolysis data and organic geochemical indices, including Total Organic Carbon (TOC), S1, S2, S3, Hydrogen Index (HI), and Oxygen Index (OI). Due to the low TOC and S2 values, this formation is classified as significantly poor in organic matter content. The distribution of samples on the relevant diagrams indicates that the organic matter predominantly consists of Type IV kerogen, with no effective potential for hydrocarbon generation. Although some intervals of the studied succession show a relative decrease in terrestrial organic input, a relative increase in AOM abundance, and an increase in marine components based on palynofacies analysis, indicating a relative improvement in preservation conditions, this state was likely the result of a combination of low sedimentation rates and prolonged oxygen exposure. Under slow sedimentation conditions, organic matter remains in contact with oxygen for an extended period, facilitating gradual oxidation and the loss of hydrocarbon-generating components. Consequently, even in intervals of this formation characterized by slower deposition, the sedimentary environment was unsuitable for preserving organic matter and converting it into productive kerogen. From an applied perspective, these findings conclusively rule out the hydrocarbon-generating potential of the Dalichai Formation and, consequently, its possible role as a source rock in the Alborz Basin. They further indicate that additional investigations into its source rock potential are not warranted. Accordingly, the Dalichai Formation may be excluded from subsequent regional source rock assessments.
