Abstract
The city of Masjed Soleiman, recognized as one of Iran's oldest hydrocarbon-rich regions, has recently faced significant geotechnical hazards. The analysis of pipeline failures is crucial for ensuring the safety and optimal performance of these facilities. This study aims to investigate the impact of geotechnical hazards on oil and gas pipelines in the Masjed Soleiman region. To achieve this, spatial data and descriptive information related to the oil and gas pipelines were utilized to examine the correlation between areas subject to geological hazards and the occurrence of incidents along the pipelines. A quantitative approach was developed to assess the influence of geotechnical hazards on the stability of oil and gas pipelines. Spatial vector data layers—including pipeline routes, subsidence zones, landslides, and seismic activity—were integrated within a GIS environment. Using spatial overlay analysis and relative frequency metrics, the spatial relationship between failure points and hazard-affected zones was evaluated. This analysis encompassed neighborhood adjacency and the assessment of fracture density in high-risk areas. additionally, for multi-criteria decision analysis and hazard zonation, a fuzzy overlay method employing fuzzy membership functions was implemented, considering criteria such as subsidence, landslides, and seismicity. The results indicate that geotechnical hazards constitute a significant factor in the occurrence of failures such as corrosion and cracking in pipeline systems. Spatial analyses revealed that a considerable proportion of failure points are situated within zones exhibiting high hazard levels. This finding underscores subsidence as a primary factor contributing to pipeline failures in the studied region.
