Abstract
The Bam area in northern Kerman Province, as part of the Cenozoic magmatic belt of Iran, hosts magmatic activities associated with copper mineralization. During this magmatism, andesitic and trachybasaltic volcanic rocks as well as semi-deep granitoid intrusive bodies have been emplaced in the region. Biotite, as a mafic silicate mineral, can provide valuable information about the nature of the parent magma, tectonic setting, and its relationship with copper mineralization. Studies conducted on the biotites of the region andesites indicate that they are Mg-rich and their chemical composition has been modified by post-formation processes. These biotites originated from a calc-alkaline parent magma and formed in a subduction zone setting. Their oxygen fugacity conditions were relatively high and corresponded to Ni-NiO buffer. There are many similarities between the compositions of these biotites with those from granitoid bodies associated with porphyry copper mineralization. Assuming contemporaneity of the andesites with the region’s semi-deep granodiorites, it can be concluded that the granodioritic bodies have fertility potential for copper mineralization.
