Abstract

In this research, the Garau Formation is geochemically evaluated in the surface outcrop of Kabir-Kuh anticline, Ilam. For this purpose, a total of 21 rock samples were collected at regular intervals of 30 meters and were analyzed using the Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Results from this study show a very organic-rich section at the base of the Garau Formation, which is overlain by organic-poor facies. Based on the HI versus OI as well as the S2 versus TOC diagrams, the studied samples have a very high thermal maturity (i.e., late gas window) and hence the type of organic matter cannot be reliably defined. Samples studied from the Garau Formation are characterized by very low hydrogen index values (HI<100 mg HC/g TOC). Based on these observations, we can conclude that the organic matter contained in the Garau Formation has undergone deep burial in the past and hence has lost a significant part of its hydrocarbon generation potential. Currently, this formation is only able to generate variable amounts of dry gas (methane), which is important in terms of unconventional hydrocarbon resources.
