Abstract

Regarding the observation of the symptoms of Larestan inhabitants in mild to severe dental fluorosis, the concentration of fluorine in the water resources of the area was investigated. For this purpose, 62 water samples were collected from springs, drinking and agricultural water wells and cistern (water reservoirs) of the region. The concentrations of main ions and fluoride were measured in samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ionic chromatography were performed on five rock samples from the lithological units around the area. The results show that in more than 98% of the wells, the fluoride content is higher than the WHO permissible level of 1.5 mg / L. The results of groundwater chemistry and statistical studies of water and rock samples showed that the most probable source of fluorine in groundwater of the region is the release of fluorine from fluorine-bearing minerals in the soil and sediments of the region including clay minerals, mica, and also fluorapophyllite. According to the results of this study, the use of water resources in the region greatly threatens the health of the inhabitants of the area, and alternative sources of water such as karst formations or removal of fluorine in drinking water should be used.
