Abstract

In this research, potential of seismicity in Eastern part of Yazd province were determined by the Size-Number and Concentration-Area fractal models based on seismic and structural data. These fractal models used for distinguish of structure-seismic zones due to earthquakes and Quaternary faults. Fault density map was generated utilizing the Concentration-Area fractal model. Furthermore, map of earthquake’s magnitude was built up by the Size-Number fractal model; and also, a new seismic zonation map was constructed based on the both of them. Results obtained by the fractal modeling were compared with conventional modeling which shows that the fractal modeling is better for separation of seismic zones. Moreover, this method is proper for east Yazd province which is affected by Kuhbanan and Behabad faults. Based on obtained results, the fractal modeling could be used for relative zoning of the earth motion and the relationship between the length, density and the intersection of faults with potential earthquake sources and also, it can be useful in reducing the cost of seismic studies.
