Sedimentary Environment and Sequence Stratigraphy of the Asmari Formation in the Lali, Karun and Masjed-Soleiman Oil Fields

Faculty of Earth Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran

The aim of this research is to study the Asmari Formation with  late Oligocene to lower  Miocene age  which is known as one of the best reservoir formations in Iran. For better understanding and comparing lithological changes and depositional environment of this formation in wider area, three subsurface wells from three different oil fields were selected which consist of  Lali 20, Karun 3 and Masjed-soleiman 186 wells. Detailed petrographic studies and facies analysis led to recognition of 15 microfacies that have been deposited in different parts of inner ramp. Based on identification of sequence boundries and fallowing the trend of changes of facies depth, carbonate successions of the Asmari Formation in subsurface sections show shallowing upward three third-order sequences. Transgressive systems tract sediments consist of deeper subtidal facies, while highstand systems tract and regressive sediments include shallower subtidal facies of inner ramp. Combination of data from microfacies identification and depositional model presentation in sequence stratigraphy framework can be very effective in best understanding of Asmari Formation and better realization of its reservoir quality.
