Abstract

Surface fault rupture is a major hazard of earthquake and fault setback is the major approach to deal with the hazard of surface fault rupture. The fault setback has been ignored in most major cities and not adequately addressed in developing new towns in Iran, unfortunately. Field studies and remote sensing within the Pardis Town revealed the presence of several active faults in the urbon area without considering the required setback. Among them, the Pardis Fault that is 30 km long is an important active thrust with sinistral strike slip component in the southern half of the town. Minimum calculated fault setback for footwall block of Pardis, Ferdows and Hesa faults are 40, 21 and 28 meters respectively. More studies and subsurface investigations are required for identification of unknown faults in other portions of the town. Considering the GPS-estimated shortening (1.5 mm per years) along the Parchin-Eyvanekey, Pishva-Garmsar and Robatkarim faults, and total shortening in the region (3 mm per year in south Central Alborz), the remained difference might be consumed along other faults in the region, such as Pardis and Roudehen faults.
