Abstract

Smelting plants are major path ways for potentially toxic heavy metals to enter soil environment and local ecosystems. In this study, concentration of heavy metals in soils in the vicinity of a Zn-smelter in Qeshm island is investigated. Since the Zn-smelter is located near the Persian Gulf coast, assessment of heavy metal pollution on the environment surrounding the Zn-smelter is necessary. The results show that the soil is heavily contaminated with heavy metals, particularly As,Cd, Sb, Pb and Zn. However, concentration decreases with increasing distance from the smelter. Results from "potential ecological risk assessment" for soil samples indicate high ecological risk in the study area. Principal component analysis further confirms the role of the Zn-smelter in soil contamination.
