Facies, Diagenesis and Reservoir Quality of Sarvak Formation in Kupal Oilfield, SW Iran

Abstract

Study of Sarvak Formation in the Kupal oilfield led to identification of 8 sedimentary facies deposited in lagoon, barrier and open marine environments in a carbonate homoclinal ramp. Reservoir quality of Sarvak Formation is closely related to diagenetic processes. Compaction, cementation, dissolution, fracturing and dolomitization are the most important diagenetic processes controlling reservoir properties of Sarvak Formation. The first two factors decreased and the next three factors increased porosities. Most grain-supported barrier and open sea carbonate, because of compaction and cementation, have low porosity and permeability. Mud-supported lagoon carbonates have a better reservoir quality because of dissolution and fracturing. Study of the effects of diagenetic processes on the reservoir rocks can help to differentiate the zones with higher reservoir quality from zones with lower reservoir quality in the Sarvak Formation within the Kupal oilfield. This can help for better development of the Sarvak Formation in Kupal oilfield.
