Abstract

Khatoon Abad plain is located in Kerman province, about 40 kilometers east of Shahr-e-Babak city. In this study, the aquifer susceptibility to contamination is studied on the basis of hydraulic and hydrogeological parameters of aquifer. To achieve this goal, DRASTIC model was used in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to analyze aquifer quality. The term DRASTIC is an abbreviation that is formed from the first letters of the parameters used in modeling that has effect on groundwater pollution, which are Depth of water (D), Recharge net (R), Aquifer media (A), Soil media (S), Topography or slop (T), Impact of  the vadose zone (I) and saturated hydraulic Conductivity (C). These parameters were made as seven layers in Arc View software and then by ranking and giving proper weight and stacking theme, the DRASTIC index of Khatoon Abad plain was calculated. Finally by re-classification of DRASTIC index of Khatoon Abad plain into four classes such as, no risk, low vulnerability, medium vulnerability and high vulnerability, the vulnerability map of Khatoon Abad aquifer was prepared. In order to calibrate the model, nitrate ion was used. By plotting the nitrate concentrations on DRASTIC index map, it was determined that, no point with higher nitrate concentration was falling on the less vulnerable areas.  The vulnerability map of Khatoon Abad aquifer shows that about 30%  were and 70% of the area located in low in medium vulnerability areas respectively. The medium vulnerability area was located in the northwest, west and central parts of the plain. In order to prevent contamination of groundwater in these areas we should perform more conservatory measures on these areas.
